"Go and get help and don't try and do it on your own. There are lots of people and programs to help get you started."
Dave's Handyman Services
Creating his own options
David Kochie runs Dave's Handyman Service, which offers window cleaning, snow shovelling, grass cutting and other labour for clients in downtown Medicine Hat. He decided to create his own business because he felt there were few options available for a person with a disability. Community Futures Entre-Corp helped him with one-on-one training and a start-up loan, and later an expansion loan. He also got a lot of support from his family. Dave finds his work very rewarding, and believes that his success is due to his hard work and dependability – when he says he'll do something, he always follows through and does the best job possible. And his commitment is exemplary: Dave says he'll be in business until he retires at 70 years old!
